PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Several months ago, reports surfaced of child abuse at the Sunshine Child Care & Preschool in Lyman.
What's worse: a supervisor at DHHS knew about it -- and didn't address it -- for nearly a year.
Documents show Supervisor Wes Uhlman knew about reports of physical and verbal abuse, wrote a letter to the daycare, but did not alert parents or issue a conditional license until months later.
Now, that supervisor has been reassigned, but is still working within the department.
For some lawmakers, that's not enough.
"If it had been my choice, I would have found a different place for hime to work, totally," said Rep. Richard Farnsworth, D-Portland.
A DHHS spokesperson was not available for comment Sunday, but told the Portland Press Herald the department will be expanding its licensing staff.
The Government Oversight Committee has turned the investigation over to OPEGA.
"We have to work hard to make sure we do the job we have to do, that's part of our mission," said Farnsworth.
