PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- For years, immigrants and people recovering from addiction in Portland have gotten support through the non-profit, Hope Acts. Recently, a new partnership has added new form of housing to that support.

The Hope House was opened in October by philanthropist, Richard Berman, and currently houses 13 immigrants. Berman wanted a safe-house for anyone fleeing persecution, violence, and trauma in their native land.

At the Hope House, immigrants not only have a roof over their head, but a place to learn english, basic job skills, and how to get their finances together. It's a start, Berman says, to introduce them into the community.
