ROME, Italy (NEWS CENTER) -- A Bates College student studying in Rome who went missing has been found dead.

John Durkin, an economics student and football player from Rye Beach, N.H., was last seen Wednesday at a bar called Sloppy Sam's in the Campo di Fiori neighborhood in Rome.

Durkin's family confirmed the death in a statement:

"It is with much sadness that the Durkin family informs you of the loss of John Nolen Durkin and thanks everyone for their support during the past few days."

Durkin was studying in Rome through a Trinity College program this semester. On-site staff from the program are working with Italian authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding his disappearance.

Durkin was 21 years old. CNN has confirmed that Durkin's body was found inside of a train tunnel. No further details have been confirmed at this time.

Bates College Spokesperson Jay Burns called Durkin's death a heartbreaking moment for his family, friends, and the Bates community.

"I want to share our own sorrow with the family at this time," Burns told NEWS CENTER. "It's a brutal, brutal thing to go through and we're all incredibly sorry."

Bates also issued a press release with statements from staff at the college.

Bates head football coach Mark Harriman said, "The Bates football family is deeply saddened by the loss of our friend and teammate John Durkin. John's commitment to excellence in all phases of his life was inspirational to the other members of the squad and a major factor in the team's success over the past three years.

"We will remember the fortitude and character that John displayed on a daily basis and attempt to emulate those standards. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Durkin family during this difficult time."

Durkin was one of six students from Bates taking part in the Trinity program in Rome. Trinity president James F. Jones Jr. said in a statement released Saturday:

"As best that we can tell, this appears to have been an isolated incident. Trinity is doing everything possible to help the students in Rome during this time of duress, including making counseling available to any student who desires it. Counseling also will be available to students on the Trinity campus who may have known John or who feel a need to talk about this incident."
