PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- After 88 years in business, Century Tire is closing its doors.
Owner Dick Aronson says he's ready to retire after spending more than 50 years on the job. He has sold the property, which is located in Portland's up-and-coming Bayside neighborhood, to a developer. Aronson says he isn't selling the business because family-owned tire businesses are getting more and more difficult to operate.
"The big are getting bigger and they have much more buying power," Aronson said. "And you see more and more, unfortunately, small family-owned tire businesses like ours getting out of business."
Century Tire has twenty-four employees that will be out of work once the shop closes. Aronson says they have great reputations and will easily find jobs. The business will close on Friday.
