STANDISH, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --In an otherwise normal neighborhood, the Merciers have created a winter wonderland for kids of all ages. The backyard includes an ice rink and plenty of opportunities for Olympic-like fun.
"Oh it's a blast. It makes me feel like a kid again," said neighbor Danielle Nelson.
The winter wonderland is not an easy project; Don Mercier puts hours of effort into the project. It requires landscaping equipment, 26 thousand gallons of water, and a spirit for winter. The family is not figure skaters or hockey players, they just believe in outdoor fun.
"We just like to have the kids here. and have fun. and be outside in the winter," said Robin Mercier, Don's wife.
"As long as they're smiling I'm all set," said Don.
What makes this more important to Don and Robin is seeing their three-year old son, Casan, play with the other kids. Casan has cerebral palsy, and Robin says the outdoor activity helps.
"Casan actually has been on skates. He's not balanced yet but we'll get there. It will be great therapy for him as he goes along," said Robin.
No matter their ability, age, Olympic dreams, or just want to feel like a kid again, the Merciers have created a place that brings a neighborhood together.
