WEST GARDINER, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - An ice fisherman has suffered minor injuries after being accidentally shot in the back of the head.

According to state police, a 54 year old man from Raymond was ice fishing with some friends near Manning Drive in West Gardiner when a hunter shot at a porcupine in a tree.  The shot missed and the bullet hit the unidentified man with a glancing blow.

Police say a bullet appears to have travelled a few hundred yards before hitting the victim.  He was able to walk away under his own power.

Police identified the hunter as 21 year old Bryan Hickey from West Gardiner.   Hickey was near the West Gardiner Rod and Gun Club when he fired his gun, but the Vice President of the Club tells NEWS CENTER he was not on their property and that he is not a member of the Club.

The Kennebec County District Attorney will determine whether any charges should be filed in the incident.
