Chris Brown and Brett Wickard from Bull Moose join us to talk about this week's new releases.

Escape Plan  - DVD, Blu-ray
Sylvester Stallone tests how secure prisons are by breaking out of them. As you can guess, things go awry and he is locked up for real. He and fellow inmate Arnold Schwarzenegger come up with a plan to get out. The ending is not completely obvious.

Dallas Buyers Club DVD, Blu-ray
This time of year, a flood of Oscar-nominated movies are released on home video. One of this year's must see films is Dallas Buyers Club, a biopic starring Matthew McConaughey. He plays a homophobic cowboy, who is diagnosed with AIDS and ends up smuggling AIDS treatment drugs into the US. He sells them with the help of a transgendered woman played by Jared Leto. The film is up for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor (McConaughey), and Best Supporting Actor (Leto.)

Sunn O))) & Ulver - Terrestrials CD
This is a collaboration between two bands, Sunn O))) and Ulver. Sunn O))) can be pronounced as "sun" or as "sun-o." I prefer to leave off the "o" when I say it because it actually is a circle, adapted from the logo of amplifier manufacturer Sunn. Terrestrials consists of three long very slow-moving songs. Only the third one could even be said to have a chord progression. It also is the only one with vocals. The music is slow, ponderous, and almost orchestral even though the sound is dominated by droning guitars. Some of the sounds are very harsh, but the slow pace makes it all very dreamy and sometimes beautiful.

Pat Metheny Unity Group- Kin (<-->)  CD or LP
The arrows in the parentheses are part of the name of the album title. This is the first album with the current lineup of the Metheny's live band. It's good middle of the road jazz. It's not so far out that only people who like adventurous jazz will understand it. It gets a little fusiony in places, but not too much. It's boosted by incredible sax playing by Chris Potter.

Vampire Academy soundtrack CD
The film Vampire Academy opens this weekend. It's about a teenage girl who is being trained to be a guardian for her vampire best friend. The film is based on the books by Richelle Mead. The soundtrack album includes a bunch of music that the intended audience will like, including songs by Sky Ferreira, Katy Perry, and a new song by CHVRCHES (pronounced "churches.") By the way, the CHVRCHES song is an almost unrecognizable synthpop cover of Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead."
