BRIDGTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- This winter's weather mixture has caused the Down East Musher's Bowl to shorten the race and lessen the competition.

"We got a nice hard pack but there's nothing underneath it. So it's hard to get a bite," says the marshall fo the race, George Miller. And so the annual competition turned "just for fun" this year.

"We had one fella that took a hard crash yesterday and one woman that took a hard crash when she was skiing," says Miller.

The trail stretching 4.5 miles across Bridgton's Five Field's Farm, is filled with quick turn and steep hills.

"They've got some sharp corners in here in tricky places," says Sandra Choate as she's watching her granddaughter, Savannah. "Nothing they can't handle."

Savannah Rodrigue is new to the race this year. "I get to do the thing I love most." She's been training four Alaskian huskies to lead dog sleds since they were 3 weeks old.

"I love dogs. I always wanted a dog," says Rodrigue. "When we put them through a harness for the first time, they just take naturally to it."
