HERMON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Colder weather coming is tough news for many but for businesses across our area it's certainly a welcome sign.

Several skiers were out hitting the slopes at Hermon Mountain on Monday. Staff there says getting a little snow over the Martin Luther King Day holiday made a big difference.

All the rain the Bangor area received this month made January a rough one for the mountain. Staff at Bangor Motor Sports say they've also seen a decline in snowmobile sales. That came after a good start to the season after snow fell in December.

"Had we been able to control the weather and not have the rain we've had in the past few weeks obviously we would have not had that," said Luke McCannell, who is the shop's vice president, "so that was beyond our control."

"Now it cooled off..we got a bunch of snow yesterday... trails are back open and away we go," said Bill Whitcomb, who is the manager and owner of Hermon Mountain, "I call it the tail of two seasons."

Business owners say while the winter weather hasn't been great recently they usually expect a slower month in January because of the seasonal thaw during the month. They are hoping the snow will keep falling, as school vacation week in Maine will be here soon.
