PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Waste disposal is about to get cheaper in more than two dozen cities and towns.

Ecomaine is Maine's largest waste disposal company, handling about twenty-five percent of the state's garbage. The company currently charges its member communities an assessment fee for its services. That money helps to pay for its long term debt.

The Ecomaine board voted unanimously to abolish those fees beginning in July. In Portland, that translates to a savings of about half a million dollars for the upcoming fiscal year.

"We don't have to budget that over half $1 million that would have gone to the Ecomaine assessment," city councilor and Ecomaine board member Ed Suslovic told NEWS CENTER. "So that's great news for Portland, that's great news for every one of our member communities."

Ecomaine's member communities will be saving a combined total of $2.4 million.
