6 things to do this weekend

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Since Martin Luther King, Jr. Day makes this weekend a three day weekend for most people, which means there is even more time to spend with friends and family. Here's a list of six things to consider when planning the holiday weekend.

1. PARKING LOT RAIL JAM - Head to Long's Board Shop in South Portland Friday evening for a bonfire and some snowboarding fun. The event promises boxes and rails and even free giveaways, which could possibly include lift tickets. The event begins at 5 and it's free to watch the snowboarders shred. 2. VIETNAMESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION - For those looking for a cultural experience this weekend, there is a Vietnamese New Year Celebration on Saturday at the Gold Room in Portland from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. The family-focused event includes a traditional dragon dance and games with prizes for the winners. Admission to the event is free. There's an evening concert that begins at 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance for the concert. 3. ANNUAL MLK TRIBUTE SHOW - Attend a music and gospel concert to honor Martin Luther King Jr., Friday night at 7 p.m. at Merrill Auditorium. Portland Public Schools and The Kenya Hall band will perform gospel and traditional freedom songs as a tribute to Dr. King. Tickets are $11 in advance and $17 the day of the show. 4. L.L.BEAN WINTER CARNIVAL - Get in touch with the winter season at L.L.Bean's winter carnival at the flagship store in Freeport. It is scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday. 5. ICE CARVING DEMONSTRATION - A free outdoor workshop is scheduled for Sunday from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. at Camden Public Library. Master Carver Tim Pierce will demonstrate the work of art and will give tips on design and carving ice sculptures. 6. ANIMAL CARE AND HANDLING PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN - Families looking to teach their children about how to care for and handle animals should consider going to an event at the Portland Children's Museum on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. The Animal Welfare Society Humane Educator and a shelter pet will at the museum for an hour to teach families how to care for animals.
