Black Bears settle for weekend split with Vermont

ORONO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -  The University of Maine hockey team nearly dug themselves out of a three-goal third period deficit, but fell just short to Vermont 4-3 on Saturday night at Alfond Arena.

The loss drops the the Black Bears to 4-4-1 on the season, 1-2-1 in Hockey East play.  

For the second time in as many nights Maine broke a scoreless tie in the second period when Eric Schurhamer scored on the power play at 8:14. 

Vermont responded swiftly by scoring 48 seconds later, adding another three minutes after that, and more tally late in the period to take a 3-1 lead into the second intermission. 

Another Catamount goal midway through the third period give them their last insurance goal as Lewiston native Mark Anthoine scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 12:55 mark of the period with Blaine Byron tallying another with 1:58 remaining. 

The Black Bears outshot Vermont 34-33, but was just 1-of-10 on the power play.  

Martin Ouellette made 29 saves in the loss. 

Maine returns to action on Friday, Nov. 15 when it hosts Boston University. First drop of the puck is scheduled for 7 PM.
