LEWISTON, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A cheerleading gym of all-stars is getting nationwide recognition this month for winning the cover of The Cheer Leader Magazine.

"The voting was crazy," says co-owner of the magazine, Jamie Byrd. "Giving support to planet cheer... You know, good luck girls. And some of them coming from other states."

The Planet Cheer Gym in Lewiston began 10 years ago with 28 girls and they've quadrupled in size. The elite level 5 team called Galaxy... is out of this world.

"5. 6. 7. 8. 1. 2. Hit. Hit. Pull. Stick and stand." And that's just to warm up.

Coach Deneka Deletetsky says the team flopped 8 backtucks at last year's Worlds competition so they've customized a more intense training.

"We borrow from different sports. We use plyometrics. A lot of core training. Stuff we've taken from NFL players. Stuff we've taken from tennis players. And really just made our own conditioning so that would never happen again."

Two individuals from the top 5 small cheer gyms were chosen for the magazine's holiday issue set to ship November 26. Planet Cheer Gym recently won a national title for small gym -- and is known in the area for their work with cheerleaders with special needs. Judges said in addition, Planet Cheer received a tremendous amount of votes and were humbled by their selection.

"There were a lot of parents who were really really supportive of it. And not just to be on the cover," says Byrd. "When I called to tell them they were selected to be on the cover, they were so excited. You know, I love that."

"Our little gym from Maine! Ah!"

Whether it be making cover of a magazine or shooting for a big to Worlds... The cheerleaders here say success comes from giving it your all.

"I want to go out with a bang," says super-senior Anna Taglieri. "NCA was great but let's go even better and try to take on the world. That's what I'm saying."

Planet Cheer was not the only cheer gym from Maine who participated in the competition. Diamond Athletics Cheer & Dance out of Brunswick was chosen in the magazine's top 20.
