PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine man serving a life sentence for murder in the death of a 12-year-old girl is seeking a new trial based on new analysis of DNA evidence.

But a DNA expert testified Thursday that Dennis Dechaine could not be excluded as the donor of DNA found on a T-shirt and scarf belonging to Sarah Cherry, whose body was found in 1988 in Bowdoin.

Dechaine has maintained his innocence. A hearing on his motion seeking a new trial is expected to wrap up Friday.

The former laboratory director at the company that analyzed the DNA said Thursday that male DNA was found on Sarah's T-shirt, bra and scarf, but that testing did not exclude Dechaine from being the source of the DNA.
