AUGUSTA, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A community is rallying behind a small business owner battling an aggressive form of cancer.
It all started when one of Danny Deshaies' regular customers decided to throw a small benefit supper to help with his mounting medical expenses. Deshaies is fighting a rare and aggressive stage four cancer called Leiomyosarcoma.
Red Barn Restaurant owner Laura Benedict heard about the benefit and decided to sponsor it. She has been collecting donations and auction items from business owners around the state. Danny and his wife Roma have been shocked by the outpouring from their neighbors.
"It's just so overwhelming to see the support," Roma Deshaies said. "It's just a blessing, such a blessing."
The Red Barn is sponsoring a benefit dinner and auction next Monday, August 26th at the American Legion Post 205 in Augusta from 5 to 9 pm.
