PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - As the immigration debate nears a critical juncture in Washington, Mainers plan to march and hold a rally in Portland in support of comprehensive immigration reform.
Wednesday's event will feature speakers who will tell their firsthand experiences about the current system. The rally will also feature representatives from Maine's immigrant communities, musicians and members of Maine community organizations.
Selvin Arevalo, who went through the detainment and deportation process in 2009, says it's time to let immigrants live freely, without fear, and be fully embraced by the nation they've chosen as their own.
The rally sponsors include the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine; AFL-CIO; a number of religious organizations including the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland; and immigrant support groups.
