PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A six year-old girl is facing a long recovery, after suffering a serious brain injury while skiing at Sugarloaf.

Jessica Grace Walker, of Harpswell, was skiing with her family on the King's Landing trail Monday when she lost control and hit a tree.

Ski Patrol responded to the accident within minutes. Walker was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital, and then flown to Maine Medical Center in Portland.

Her aunt, Liz Simpson, says Jessica's injuries are very serious, but doctors say her helmet saved her life.

"She's been showing great purposeful movement and she's been showing response to her parents' voices, and so she's definitely coming along," Simpson told NEWS CENTER. "It's like a marathon, and she just put her sneakers on."

As Walker slowly makes progress at Maine Medical Center, her parents are facing a mountain of medical bills without insurance. There will be a benefit spaghetti supper and silent auction to help Jessica's family pay for her medical expenses. It will be held Friday April 5th from 5:30-7:30 at the Harpswell Community School. You can find more information about fundraising on the Facebook page that has been set up for Jessica.
