CHARLESTOWN, South Carolina (WCBD) -- A California winery is experimenting with aging its wine in the ocean off the South Carolina coast.

Napa Valley-based Mira Winery is sinking four cases of Cabernet Sauvignon in specially designed cages into Charleston Harbor on Wednesday.

The idea is to see what effect the motion, temperature, and light in the ocean have on the aging process after three months.

"In the ocean, where you have constant motion and a variance of temperature, but it's also very similar to what the ideal storage in a warehouse is, where you have a lack of light, different pressure. We're going to find out what happens," says Mira Winery president Jim "Bear" Dyke, Jr.

Winemakers have long known wine recovered from sunken ships has a unique taste, and the ocean is thought to have something to do with that.
