February Vacation Ideas
There are so many great options for February vacation throughout the state of Maine, from free family movies to Winter Carnivals and more.
1) Local Libraries
During vacation week, check event listings with your local libraries. Many offer free family films, crafts, and kids' shows. For example, Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick is hosting a kids' puppet show on Feb. 19.
2) Winter Carnivals
My family loves taking road trips throughout the state to explore new towns. Visiting a local Winter Carnival is a great excuse for a family excursion. In the past, we had a lot of fun at Bethel's Winter Fest. This year, the festival is featuring a Snow Volcano (the volcano erupts on Feb 16, and then becomes a sledding hill). Other vacation week festivals include Shawnee Peak in Bridgton and Old Orchard Beach. Many of these events are also free!
3) State Parks
Aroostook County State Park in Presque Isle and Fort McClary State Park in Kittery are offering family events. Kids can snowshoe, ice skate, and play outdoor games. Similarly, the Gilsland Farm/Maine Audubon in Falmouth is having a live animal show for kids.
4) Indoor Play Spaces
When the weather doesn't cooperate we are fortunate to have a variety of indoor spaces throughout the state. Many host special events during school vacation week that feature music, crafts, and special performances. We like The Peekaboo Children's Center in Westbrook, The Rumpus Room in Brunswick, and Green Light Studio in Portland. Children's museums in Portland, Augusta, Rockland, and Bangor are also great options.
