AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - Mainers will soon be able to keep a closer eye on their politicians.

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network plans to launch its Maine Capitol Connection TV channel Monday. The channel, a kind of state version of C-SPAN, will show House and Senate coverage, plus hearings, news conferences and State House events.

It will start off as a pilot with changes as needed.

Managing Editor Mal Leary says that Capitol Connection will also air interviews and explanations of how the government works. The signal will be carried via cable as well as over the air so everybody in Maine can get the channel. Its cost is covered by contributed funds.

Maine joins roughly half of the 50 states with similar coverage.
