PORTLAND - Pirates forwards Ethan Werek and Chris Conner each tallied a goal and Pirates goalie Mark Visentin made 22 saves for his second shutout of the season as the Portland Pirates defeated the Albany Devils 2 -0 in front of 6,001 fans at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The win gives the Atlantic Division leading Pirates 56 points on the year, while the Devils now have 43 points on the year. The Pirates has now won three straight and Devils are now 0-3 against the Pirates since moving from Lowell to Albany in 2010.
The game was scoreless after the end of the first period, but the period was still action packed, as Pirates forward Joel Rechlicz engaged new Devils forward Cam Janssen just 2:40 into the game.
The Pirates took a 1-0 lead just 1:22 into the second when an Ethan Werek pass set up Chris Conner for the first Pirates goal. It was Conner 9th goal of the season.
The Devils had an opportunity to tie it up with 6:36 left in the second when Lane was called for hooking, but it was the Pirates who had the best opportunity. Jordan Martinook forced a turnover at the blue line sending him on a shorthanded breakaway but he was denied by Frazee.
The Pirates extend their lead to two with 12:35 left in third when Werek took a shot from the left faceoff circle and found the back of the net. Chris Brown and Mark Louis were credited with the assists on Werek's 9th goal of the season. The Pirates, just one night after committing 11 penalties, only allowed 3 power plays and were a perfect 3 for 3 on the penalty kill.
The Pirates improve to 27-16-1-1, while the Devils fall to a 17-16-1-8 on the year. Visentin improves to 10-9-1 on the season with the win, notching his second career shutout after stopping all 22 shots he faced, while Frazee falls to 3-8-4 despite making 27 saves for the devils.
The Pirates are back in action on Friday, February 8 as they travel to take on the Providence Bruins at the Dunkin' Donut Center for the start of a 5 game road trip, their longest of the season. Puck drops at 7:05 pm
