PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Red Claws are jumpstarting a new fundraiser for the Center for Grieving Children.
The center works with bereaved kids or families. They start new programs all the time and just opened a new facility in Sanford, so finding funding for the non-profit can be difficult.
They've teamed up with the Maine Red Claws to start a program called Hoops For Hope. Basketball fans and businesses will be able to pledge money for every free throw the team makes at home this season. In turn, with help from sponsor, General Dynamic Bath Iron Works, the team will donate $20 for every free throw they sink. The goal is to raise about $12,500.
Organizers say, not only will it help fund programs for the center, but the kids will love their working relationship with the team.
Hoops for Hope kicks off on Saturday, February 2. You can find pledge cards as you walk into the game, or make a pledge on the Center for Grieving Children's website.
