WASHINGTON (AP) - Lawmakers in Washington will say their final goodbyes to Senator Daniel Inouye before his body travels back to his native Hawaii for a funeral this weekend. The memorial service for the third-in-line to the presidency is set for Friday at the Washington National Cathedral. President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are among those offering tributes during the memorial.
Senator Inouye died Monday of respiratory complications at the age of 88. He was Hawaii's first congressman in 1959 following statehood. He was then elected to the Senate in 1962. Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress. He received a Medal of Honor for his valiant efforts during World War Two in the European Theatre.
Inouye's body will be flown back to Hawaii on Saturday with a funeral and burial set for Sunday at the Memorial Cemetary of the Pacific.
