(NEWS CENTER) -- Tim Flaherty dedicated his life to protecting others and was a Portland firefighter for 33 years.
Flaherty passed away in August 2011 from myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer that is one of the many cancers linked to firefighters.
To honor his memory and raise money for cancer research, on Sunday, October 14th, a 5K run/walk will be held in Flaherty's name. He was known as a wonderful father, friend, outdoorsman and runner. Flaherty's family and friends are hoping that despite the ominous weather people will head to Yarmouth to support this cause.
The funds raised through Tim's Run will be donated to The MPN Research Foundation and the Maine Cancer Foundation. Flaherty's daughter, Melissa McNaboe, visited the studio to tell us how special this event is to her and her family.
