HARPSWELL, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says a 25-year-old man was rescued Saturday after becoming stranded in the water.

The Sherriff's Department says John Alexander Eckhouse from Sherman Oaks, California was out in a 14-foot Boston Whaler sailboat Saturday evening when it overturned in Middle Bay in Harpswell.  He was near drowning when his screams for help were heard and he was rescued by fisherman who were in the area and brought him to shore.

Eckhouse was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick where he is in stable condition.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office and Harpswell Neck Fire/EMS assisted the U.S. Coast Guard in response to the distressed boater call.
