BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- When a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, the whole family helps battle the disease. An event happening on Mother's Day is hoping to bring families who have been affected by breast cancer together.

Johnnie Walker of Milford knows first hand how scary a breast cancer diagnosis is. It was just last year that she went through a double mastectomy. She says the community resources were invaluable to her.

Walker says, "I think community awareness and education is key. That was the reason I was diagnosed so early and I know that that is possible because of community fund raising."

That is one of the reasons there will be a community fund raiser held  at the Seadog in Bangor on Mothers Day May 13th. All of the proceeds will go toward breast cancer research. Mackie Hill is the organizer for Celebrate Mom-Fight Breast Cancer Brunch. Hill says Mothers day is a natural fit. She said,"I thought what better time to do it than Mothers day. It's when the disease strikes so many mothers and daughters and families so it seemed like the perfect event."

Hill says they are hoping to make the event both a family celebration and perhaps bring in others who don't have family. "It's a way to make connections, it's a way to come and support each other."Hill said," Sometimes I think it's a way to bring out people who may not be connected to others who are going through the same things they have been. The Bangor community is good about those things but there are always those who get missed. "

Organizers are hoping the event will help bring people together into a new family, all fighting to beat breast cancer.
