Portland, ME. (NEWS CENTER)-- Birders from all across the country will be taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count this weekend. Last year, more than ninety-two thousand people counted more than eleven million birds. The list featured 594 species.
Laura Turner of Wild Birds Unlimited in South Portland is one of Maine's ambassadors for this year's count. This will be the fifteenth year of the Great Backyard Bird Count.
"You put the data in. You receive your confirmation number and it's going to literally light up on the map of the United States and Canada, so you're going to be able to see it fairly instantaneously," Turner told NEWS CENTER.
Bird watching is a popular activity in Maine. Thirty-six percent of Mainers watch birds. According to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Maine is tied for fourth in the nation in terms of the percentage of people who watch birds.
