  • WATERVILLE, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A host of organizations came together for a first of its kind driving expo for seniors at the Muskie Senior Center.

"When you think that people who are of the age between 65 to 74 have a greater risk for motor vehicle crashes than any other age group except 16 year olds, that's a pretty sobering statistic," stated Secretary of State Charlie Summers, who addressed the crowd to kick-off the event.

According to AAA, 15% of drivers in Maine are over age 65, a number that will nearly double to 27% in the next twenty years.

The expo featured talks about motor vehicle laws, demonstrations of adaptable equipment, driving tips and tests for hearing, vision and reaction time.

"I don't have concerns at this point, but I know that I am getting older and I want to make sure my reflexes are what they should be," explained Nancy Aldrich.  "I think sometimes people drive longer than they should, so it is good for the whole community that the center is able to do something like this."

AAA has lots of advice for senior drivers and their families on their webiste which you can find by clicking here.
