(NBC) -- The award winning creator of the "Law & Order" dynasty brings a new show to NBC tonight.

"Chicago Fire" gives us an inside look at the everyday heroes who risk their lives to save others, and how they deal with personal toll of the job.

"It is not a fire of the week show," promises creator Dick Wolf. "It's a show about heroes, and what it boils down to is, who are these guys who run into burning buildings?"

Training alongside the real life Chicago Fire Department gave the show's cast some insight.

"It gives you a glimpse of the intensity of what these guys go through," says Jesse Spencer.

Yet learning to look the part of a firefighter does have limits.

On set, the fires go out with the flick of a switch.

Beyond the physical dangers "Chicago Fire" also shows the emotional toll that goes along with being firefighters and paramedics.

"They put themselves in harm's way. They walk that way towards the harm, as opposed to the other way, and everyone wants to run the other way, and they bear the scars of that," says cast member Eamonn Walker.

How the paramedics and firefighters deal with those scars adds to the drama.

"Chicago Fire" premieres tonight at 10pm ET on NBC.
