CAMDEN, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The first day of the U.S. National Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl is less than a day away. Today, competitors got a chance to check out the chute, get their toboggans inspected, and take some practice runs.
It's one of life's most juvenile joys. Sliding down a hill on a candy cane shaped sled made of wood with a bunch of your friends. With maybe a little friendly competition mixed in.
This year sees the addition of a new type of entry called the Experimental Class. Organizers saw a trend in the more exotic looking sleds and wanted to keep the playing field even. There are some size and weight restrictions but after that the sky is the limit. The Experimental Class can be a 2 - 3 or 4 person team. Some entries were made out of Kevlar and fiberglass while others looked more like a rocket complete with an air intake in the nose and a parachute.
In the end, the trophy goes home with the fastest team. There's no points for second place. The rest go home with a sense of accomplishment, some bragging rights, and hopefully no lasting scars.
The action officially kicks off at 8:00 Saturday morning and goes through to Sunday.
