(NBC News) St. Patrick's day festivities kicked off around the country Sunday amid controversy.

Boston's mayor chose not to participate in the parade there, and New York Mayor Bill DeBlasio also won't be participating in today's parade due to issues over gay rights groups.

Several beer companies withdrew sponsorships in both New York and Boston to show their support for the LGBT community.

Meanwhile, winter weather is also making a comeback in much of the Northeast, but, that's not likely to dampen the spirits of those who want to celebrate the luck of the Irish.
