(NBC) - For the first time since the deadly shooting spree at Sandy Hook Elementary students and teachers who survived the attack are back in class.

Counselors are on the new campus in nearby Monroe, Connecticut will be there for as long as needed, along with a heavy and highly visible police presence.

Administrators are also trying to make the new classrooms as similar to those at Sandy Hook as possible, moving in desks and equipment from their old school and even putting book bags and jackets in the same places they were the day of the tragedy.

"They've done a good job at trying to make it as comfortable as possible for the kids," says father Andrew Paley.

Counselors and administrators hope that at least a little comfort for the kids can come from the structure and routine of being back in class and spending time with their friends.
