KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - NATO hasn't said whether it considers the incident an "insider" attack, but a firefight between U.S. forces and their Afghan army allies in eastern Afghanistan has left two Americans and three Afghan soldiers dead.

Local officials say the fighting started when what is believed to have been a mortar fired by insurgents struck a checkpoint set up by U.S. forces. The Afghan Defense Ministry says the battle that followed was the result of a "misunderstanding" between international forces and Afghan soldiers.

The military death brings the number of American troops killed the 11-year war to 2,000.

The number of American dead reflects an Associated Press count of those members of the armed services killed inside Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion on Oct. 7, 2001.
