The Valdez ran aground on Mar. 24, 1989, spilling 11 million gallons of crude oil into Alaska's Prince William Sound.

The reef upon which the Valdez breached its hull was previously associated with another famous ship.  It was named Bligh Reef, after Capt. William Bligh who was commander during the famous mutiny on the Bounty.
