Key was inspired to write his poem by the battle at Fort McHenry, which took place on Sept. 13, 1814.

The 15-star flag that flew over the fort had been redesigned since the US expanded beyond the original 13 colonies.  The two states represented by the additional stars were Vermont and Kentucky.

That version of the flag also had 15 stripes, but it was scaled back down to 13 for the next redesign in 1818
