PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - In the spirit of National Donut Day, we at NEWS CENTER decided to try something new. Instead of the chocolate glazed or jelly filled delights, we decided to try potato donuts, made fresh daily at Holy Donut in Portland.
Owner Lee Kellis opened the shop about a year ago and says she was trying different recipes for donuts at home for years until she perfected the recipe by using potatoes. It's not just the potatoes that make these different. Lee has come up with a variety of wild flavors like bacon and cheese and mojito. The favorite flavor, though, is dark chocolate sea salt. Among the other customer favorites are the Allen's Coffee Brandy, blueberry and even a chai donut.
