The first Emmy Awards were handed out on Jan. 25, 1949.
The aborted nickname didn't come from Pres. Eisenhower. In fact, "Ike" was actually rejected as an option because of that similarity.
It was derived instead from a piece of early television equipment called an iconoscope tube. When that fell through, another piece of equipment took its place -- the image orthicon camera tube, or "immy" for short.
The name was changed slightly to "Emmy" to make it more feminine, since the award was designed in the shape of a woman.
