R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe was born on Jan. 4, 1960.
Stipe is best known for such gloomy songs as "Everybody Hurts" and "Losing My Religion." The unusually upbeat tone of "Shiny Happy People" may be partially attributable to his collaboration with Pierson. She and her bandmates from the B-52's maintained more of a fun-loving vibe with their music.
Both bands got their start in Athens, Georgia.
