d. Secretary of War
Pierce has the honor of being the only native of New Hampshire ever elected President. He was born on Nov. 23, 1804.
Despite his northern roots, he often sympathized with the southern states in the run up to the Civil War. He and Jefferson Davis remained close friends even when their two states were on opposite sides of the conflict.
When Union troops captured a plantation owned by Davis in Mississippi, they found a stack of letters from Pierce. By expressing his sympathies to Davis, those letters badly hurt Pierce's reputation in the North.
