Pres. Polk was born on Nov. 2, 1795. Through either negotiations or war, he acquired the entire West Coast. The new land was added in two big chunks.
Polk cut a deal with Great Britain to secure the rights to the northwestern Oregon territory, which includes the present states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho and parts of Montana and Wyoming.
He also acquired all or part of another seven states in the southwest as the result of his victory in the Mexican-American War.
