KENNEBUNK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - The threat of a shooting happening inside a school is something that police must take very seriously these days.
Twenty police officers in Kennebunk spent the last two days honing their skills and working on a quick response. They picked this week to use the middle school while students are on vacation.
Tactics they use responding to a situation like that are changing. Response times are everything. They can mean the difference between life and death.
"If there's active shooting going on inside, secure the building as best you could and wait for the SWAT team and it could take literally hours for them to get a team together. We train differently now. We train that you respond, you go in and you eliminate the threat", said Chief Robert MacKenzie.
In April RSU 21 and police will hold special training sessions for teachers.
