PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A major storm rolls in Thursday and the state is taking precautions. Public Works crews are pre-treating trouble spots around the city of Portland Thursday morning.  The crews will start with hills and intersections around downtown, then focus on main roads and secondary streets. The city started with 8,000 tons of salt this winter, and there are two tons of it left.

The snow will travel south to north, hitting southern Maine is the later morning hours Thursday. Many schools have early release due to worsening travel conditions in the afternoon.

Plows and salt trucks will be working around the clock Thursday and Friday. It's Valentine's Day Friday, so the snow will affect many businesses and deliveries.
