SOUTH BEND, Indiana (NEWS CENTER) - A day after the Maine men's hockey team escaped a late Notre Dame rally, the Irish completed a late comeback on Saturday with two goals in the final 1:08 to beat the Black Bears 3-2.
Notre Dame senior Bryan Rust scored the game-winner with 43 seconds left in regulation, which was the first time Maine trailed the entire game. Rust scored the game-tying the game 25 seconds before the game-winner.
The first goal came courtesy of a one-timer in traffic beating Maine goalie Martin Ouellette on the glove side. The second was a single-handed effort weaving through four Black Bear skaters before shooting the puck past Ouellette again.
Cam Brown and Ben Hutton scored Maine's goals. Senior goalie Ouellette was put to work for the second straight night stopping 39 shots. Notre Dame finished with a 42-22 shot on goal advantage.
Maine (13-10-3 overall, 7-5-2 in Hockey East) will host Merrimack for a weekend series starting next Friday.
