Closing ceremony wraps up Special Olympics

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (AP) - The Special Olympics Maine Winter Games are wrapping up at Sugarloaf.

Nearly 500 athletes have participated in the event that concludes Tuesday with a closing ceremony.

Events began on Sunday and the opening ceremony and parade of athletes were held Monday. Events included cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, snowshoe and speed skating.

Other events at the 45th winter games included a torchlight parade, fireworks and a dance. Special Olympics Maine held the first-ever winter event in 1969.
