AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - A study says expanding Maine's Medicaid system would cost an estimated $807 million over the first decade, even with the federal government footing the entire bill for the first three years.

The report by the Alexander Group says Mainecare enrollment is expected to grow from 318,000 to about 382,000 over the next 10 years even if the state does nothing. It says the figure would grow to 584,000 under a Medicaid expansion.

Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew said Friday that the state can't count on promises of additional federal funding. She noted that Medicaid funding has been cut over the past 25 years.

The Maine DHHS hired the Alexander Group for a review focusing on the feasibility of expanding Maine's Medicaid program under the federal Affordable Care Act.
