GRAY, Maine (AP) - The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for most of Maine. Forecasters are also warning of the possibility of ice jams this weekend.
The flood watch from late Saturday afternoon through Sunday evening coincides with a forecast for heavy rain. But meteorologist Margaret Curtis says one of the biggest concerns is ice jams.
She says most of Maine's rivers are frozen and that the sudden warmup could cause the ice to break up, creating the potential for unexpected damming and localized flooding.
The storm begins with an icy mix early Saturday before turning to rain. Curtis says there could be up to an inch-and-a-half of rain before it ends early Sunday.
