(NEWS CENTER) -- This week saw the beginning of a new session of the Maine Legislature, one that is bound to be contentious, especially when it comes to different aspects of government assistance.

Democrats will be pushing, once again, to increase the number of Mainers who would be eligible for MaineCare, our state's version of Medicaid, by some 70,000 people.  Something that Governor Paul LePage vetoed during the last session.

Meanwhile, the governor will be pushing his own agenda of cutting waste and abuses in the "food stamp" and general assistance programs.

We talk with NEWS CENTER democratic analyst Ethan Strimling and guest republican Charlie Summers about those stories and more.
