WESTBROOK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- "Miracle," the 8-week-old kitten that was placed in a microwave as part of a social media stunt, now has a new home.

On Friday, the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland announced that Mary Byram of Scarborough had won the lottery to take Miracle home. Byram found out Thursday.  She said, "It was unreal. I just was so excited."

Miracle was undernourished and had a flea infestation when she came to the shelter in September. Shelter staff say she likely was taken from her mother at too young an age, a common issue with young cats.

Two 15-year-old girls have been charged with animal cruelty in connection with the stunt. They posted a video on Vine showing one of the girls placing the cat in the microwave and starting it. The video then cuts to a shot of the cat being taken out.

The shelter received hundreds of offers from all over the world to adopt Miracle, and staff say the kitten has become an ambassador for them. Right now the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland has 150 cats and kittens available for adoption and another 150 in foster homes.

Byram said, "People need to recognize that animals are creatures worth respecting and loving."

Byram says she plans to ease Miracle in to life in her home. She has another shelter cat as well that needs to get used to a new sister.

"She's a healthy kitty. She is a miracle," Byram said.

If you are interested in adopting a cat or kitten, you can call the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland at (207) 854-9771, or your local shelter.

The shelter also has a painting of Miracle that is being auctioned off to raise money. You can learn more about that by clicking here.
