BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --- Hundreds of people are getting ready to run and walk in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday to raise money in the fight against breast cancer. Each year the event helps raise breast cancer awareness while honoring those who have been touched by the disease.

One breast cancer survivor in our area taking part this year is Kathy Rajala. She's a card game dealer at Hollywood Casino in Bangor.

Rajala says she was first diagnosed with breast cancer about 5 years ago. She says luckily doctors were able to catch the disease at an early stage. Rajala had two surgeries to remove her cancer. She then had months of follow up treatment.

She says through it all she never lost hope that she would be okay and she encourages others touched by the disease to do the same.

"It {breast cancer} doesn't have to be a double tragedy," she said, "what it is is you hear the words and you say..with everything I do in my life...where do I go from here? How do I change it? How do I fix it? What can I get out of this? Because there is something positive..even out of getting breast cancer. There is something positive you learn in life..you learn life lessons."

Kathy Rajala has will be the honorary captain for Hollywood Casino's team at the Komen Race on Sunday. She says she's still looking for more members to join it.
