a. $100 fine

The trial began on July 10, 1925.

Tennessee science teacher John Scopes was brought up on charges of teaching evolution, which was prohibited by state law.  His goal was never to win the case, but rather to expose the injustice of the law.  And he got just the guilty verdict he wanted.

Scopes' conviction was later thrown out on a technicality by the Tennessee Supreme Court, although the evolution ban itself was upheld.  It was finally repealed in 1967, one year before the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision that rendered all such laws unconstitutional.
